Happy New Year!

I would like to personally wish all of you a very happy and healthy 2007.

CONFERENCE CHAOS
College basketball season has already been filled with many surprises and we are only half-way through the season.  If rating the best conferences in the nation, experts all are surprised that the PAC 10 looks like it will be one of the best three in the nation.  Everyone knew that the annual powers like UCLA and Arizona would be superb, but Oregon, Washington State and USC have really developed and are genuine threats to beat anyone in the country.  Also, we cannot forget Washington, who definitely has been up and down, but certainly is a threat – especially when playing on their home court.

In my mind, the Top Three Conferences thus far are:

  1. SEC
  2. ACC
  3. PAC 10

PLAYER OF THE YEAR?
If I were making my vote for the Player of the Year right now, my choice so would be Alando Tucker of Wisconsin.  In addition, my mid-season report would select the following as the Super Six based on consistency.  My All-Americans are:

  1. Kevin Durant of Texas
  2. Alando Tucker of Wisconsin
  3. Taurean Green of Florida
  4. Glen Davis of LSU
  5. Tyler Hansbrough of North Carolina
  6. Nick Fazekas of Nevada

BOB KNIGHT MAKES HISTORY
Obviously, congratulations has to go out to The General, Coach Robert Montgomery Knight of Texas Tech, on becoming the obtaining the most wins of any coach in Division I NCAA basketball.  As all of you know, he posted his 880th Division I NCAA basketball win over New Mexico to pass Dean Smith earlier this month.  Despite this accomplishment, do not be shocked if Knight coaches for several more years and gets his wins up to the mid 900 number.  Wouldn’t it also be ironic that one of his formers players and pupils, Coach Mike Krzyzewski of Duke, has the potential to pass his mentor when it is all said and done.

COACH OF THE YEAR
My mid-season Coach of the Year would have to be either John Beilein of West Virginia or Todd Lickliter of Butler as they have both totally exceeded expectations at the mid-season mark.

GET BROOKS SOME AIR TIME
A player who deserves more publicity and notoriety is the outstanding scoring guard, Aaron Brooks of Oregon.  He was the key reason why Oregon was able to give UCLA their first loss of the season..

V FOUNDATION GALA ON MAY 18th
I recently announced the date of May 18th for the Dick Vitale Gala to benefit the V Foundation for Cancer Research with a special salute and toast to Mike Krzyzewski.  I am so excited about the overwhelming support and response we have been receiving from all across the country for this event.  We are well on our way to a sell-out event and a spectacular evening all to help fight this dreaded disease.  If you are interested in attending this event or contributing, please call 1-800-4-Jimmy-V and ask to find out more about the Dick Vitale Gala.  Tickets are limited to the first 400 guests and are $1,000.00 per person.  Sponsorship opportunities are also available.

Enthusiastically,

Dick Vitale
