10th Anniversary of the LWR Tennis Center

I was happy to be a part of the 10 year anniversary celebration of the Lakewood Ranch Tennis Center located in Lakewood Ranch, FL. I am a proud member of the club and enjoy playing there whenever I am home. Paul Lederman, Director of the tennis program, does a terrifc job, as does his entire staff.

For the celebration I introdcued two outstanding players that played in an exciting exhibition match for all the members to enjoy.

Playing was Sekou Bangoura Jr., the #1 ranked 16 year old in the United States and a Lakewood Ranch resident, versus Julian Link, the #1 35 and under player in th United States. It was a terrific match-up, with an extremely high level of tennis played throughout. The strength of Link proved a little too much for Bangoura and he eventually won in two sets.

John C. Fowke Homes Showcase

On April 14th, 2008 my wife an I were excited to have the opportunity to make a special visit to the beautiful showcase home built by John C. Fowke Homes, near Tampa, Florida. The home that was showcased for the evening was gorgeous and the people could not have been nicer.

My wife and I were joined by our good friends, Bob and Beverly Neville and Joe Russo and we were all welcomed by the impressive team of caring individuals at John C. Fowke Homes. Chuck Fowke made a donation for over $10,000 to the V Foundation that evening in support of my mission to raise $1 million for pediatric cancer research in memory of Payton Wright, who lost her life to cancer last year. It was honor to be there to support Chuck Fowke and his entire team and I was truly touched by their generous donation.

Pirates Spring Training:

One of the great things about living in the Sarasota/Bradenton area is that we are so fortunate to have so many major league teams that spring train here. I absolutely love going out to the fields and talking baseball to some of the players and managers. There is nothing like the fresh smell of grass on the fields and the sound of the bat hitting the ball. On Thursday, Feb. 21st, I took my two 5 year old grandsons, Connor and Jake, to Pirate City in Bradenton.

We had a great time, as the boys got to go on the field and talk to all the players and even play catch with a few of them.We spent time with superstars Jason Bay and Freddy Sanchez. Robert Nutting, Chairman of the Pirates organization and Frank Coonelly, President, do an amazing job and are terrific people. Jim Trdinich, Director of Media Relations, took us all around and could not have been nicer to me and my grandsons. They left with more than 5 major league baseballs and most importantly, they left with HUGE smiles on their faces. It was a great time at the ballpark!

Out of Door Academy - Grandparents Day:

I had a great time going to the Out of Door Academy school for Grandparents Day on February 15, 2008.  My three grandkids, Connor, Jake and Sydney attend Out of Door Academy in Siesta Key, FL.

It is a terrific school and my wife and I got such a kick watching them perform their class songs.  We then got to sit outside and have lunch with the kids and then got to meet their teachers and visit their classrooms.  Connor and Jake are twins and are in Ms. Duffey PreK class.

Sydney is in Kindergarten and in Ms. Hancock’s class.  It was really a special time and one I’ll always cherish.

Sarasota Piano Recital:

I was so honored and proud to attend my 6 year old grand daughter, Sydney Sforzo's, piano recital on February 3rd. Her teacher, Linda Rudzinski, organized a terrific performance of all her students. Sydney performed three numbers and my wife and I could not have been more proud.

Style Magazine Shoot and Sarasota Community Foundation Event:

I had a blast doing a photo shoot for Style magazine (a special insert to the Sarasota Herald Tribune) with my two daughters, Terri and Sherri. The article is featuring three prominent people in the Sarasota area and the people that work behind the scenes for them. We did the shoot in my office and the three of us had a great time doing it with photographers Barbara Banks and Kathryn Brass.

My wife and I attended an event for the Sarasota Community Foundation on Jan. 22, 2008 which featured Barbara Metzler, the author of the book, "Passionaries." It was a terrific evening and we had the chance to mingle with some great leaders in the Sarasota community - Lee Wetherington, and Phil and Julie Delaney.

Boys and Girls Club Christmas Party:

One of my favorite things that my wife and I do each holiday season is having several youngsters from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Sarasota County come over to our house for a Christmas party. We have been doing this for several years now and it is truly something I look forward to. We have loads of food and drinks and the kids have a blast eating and sharing stories. We then head to the Christmas tree where the youngsters find packages with their names on them. The look on the their faces as they rip open their gifts is priceless. The staff at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Sarasota, under the leadership of Mack Reid, does such an amazing job - it is truly a special organization and one I am proud to be associated with.

St. Armand's Tree Lighting Ceremony:

Had a great time spending Friday night in beautiful St. Armands Circle where they had the official tree lighting ceremony.

I was joined by my wife and three grandkids for a terrific Italian dinner at Le Colonne Restaurant and then we joined in all the holiday festivities, which included carolers, the lighting of the Christmas tree, and of course, a visit from Santa Claus. My grandkids got a thrill sitting on Santa's lap and telling him everything they wantd for the Christmas. We had a super time on one of my day's off...

Boys and Girls Clubs Hometown Hero Award:

I was honored to be selected at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Sarasota County Kids Night Out Gala as a recipient of the Hometown Hero Award. It was a special evening at the Ritz-Carlton in Sarasota on Nov. 8th. I have always respected the work done by the Boys and Girls Club organizations, it is truly a remarkable place where youngsters can grow, develop, and create friendships and skills that will last them a lifetime. The evening featured two greats - one in athletics and one in the entertainment world.

We were so blessed to have speak at the event, Johnny Bench, Hall of Fame catcher for the Cincinnati Reds and movie legend, Danny Glover. I was in awe meeting Johnny as he is without a doubt the best catcher to ever play the game. He spoke to the crowd that evening and his one liners had everyone rolling out of their seats. It was also a thrill to meet Danny Glover. I have enjoyed his work for so many years. He was truly inspiring when he addressed the audience and told of his personal experiences growing up in the Boys and Girls Clubs of San Francisco and how those experiences helped shape him into the man he is today. The event also honored six individuals from Sarasota as "Hometown Heroes". I was flattered to be a part of that group that included Betty Schoenbaum, Diane McFarlin, Teri Hansen, Graci McGillicuddy and Dr. Richard Vinton. It was a special night benfitting a terrific cause.

Payton Wright Pediatric Cancer Donation:

Recently, the Payton Wright Pediatric Cancer Research Grant for the V Foundation was the fortunate recipient of funds raised Anne Goyer and her team at FIN-X ’07, the international conference and expo for industrial finishers.  Anne Goyer explained, “I was inspired by the recent battle a 5-year old from our community fought against a rare form of brain cancer.  Her name is Payton Wright,” Goyer continued.  “Most of us have been touched by someone who has or is fighting this dreaded disease.  After following Payton’s battle for the past year, I knew making a donation to fight cancer in Payton’s name was a great idea.  She and her family fought a courageous and inspirational battle.  Sadly, we lost Payton on May 29 of this year, but her spirit lives on.”

As you know, I have made it my mission to raise funds for a $1 million grant to fight Pediatric Cancer in Payton Wright’s name through The V Foundation for Cancer Research.  I was really touched emotionally by Payton’s courage and grace and I can’t tell you the feeling I get when giving back to cancer patients like Payton.  FIN-X ’07 is an amazing organization and I am honored to have them assist me achieve this goal.

Donations to the Payton Wright Pediatric Cancer Research Grant should be sent to “The V Foundation, c/o Tandem Enterprises, 7810 Mathern Ct., Lakewood Ranch, FL 34202 or visit www.jimmyv.org.

Boys and Girls Clubs of Sarasota County PSA:

I had a lot of fun on 10/10/07 as I shot a special Public Service Announcement (PSA) for one of my favorite organizations, The Boys and Girls Clubs of Sarasota County.  Under the leadership of Mack Reid, the Boys and Girls Clubs are doing some wonderful things right here in my community.  The youngsters who attend the Boys and Girls Clubs have the wonderful opportunity to engage in a wide variety of after-school activities led by some of the most dedicated and talented people serving kids.

The PSA was for their upcoming ”Kids Night Out” Celebrating Hometown Heroes event on Thursday, November 8th at the Ritz Carlton Sarasota.  I am honored to be one of the hometown heroes that will share in this special night.  Other hometown heroes include some of my friends and other leaders in the community that I admire greatly such as: Graci McGillicuddy, Teri Hansen, Diane McFarlin, Betty Schoenbaum, Myra Monfort and Dr. Richard Vinton.  What an incredible group of giving individuals and I am privileged to be a part of this special evening.  Making the night even more memorable will be the two celebrities who will join in the festivities, Hall of Famer Johnny Bench and actor, Danny Glover.  The event is sure to be a huge success and in the end it will be the kids served at the Boys and Girls Club who will win.

I would like to also recognize Veronica Miller and Scott Carpenter of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Sarasota County who have worked tirelessly to make this event a success.  They have worked on every detail and they helped me tremendously the day of our shoot.  I can’t wait for the event – it will be “Awesome, Baby!”.

Tamap Bay Lightning Practice:

On Tuesday, Oct. 2nd my family and I got a special treat as Tampa Bay Lightning Head Coach, John Tortorella invited us to watch his team practice before his season gets underway on Thursday.

The entire Lightning organization, including Arlynn Haarer, Jay Preble and Bill Wickett all in the Lightning PR/Communications office, could not have been nicer to me and my family. Upon arrival they greeted us with personalized Lightning jerseys (for me and my five grandkids), allowed me to take my grandkids into the Lightning locker room to meet some players and take photos.

Coach Tortorella is a class guy and spent lots of time with us on the ice before practice and signing pucks for my grandkids and taking photos.

The kids were in awe of meeting superstar Vinny Lecavalier, Brad Richards and Marty St. Louis - all of whom were every gracious and accomodating. We then watched the team practice - we were all amazed at what terrific athletes the players were and how gracefully they move around the ice.

Coach Tortorella invited my whole family back on Saturday night to watch the team play a regular season game versus the Thrashers. Go Lightning!

Horizons Academy - Bradenton, FL:

On Tuesday, September 18th I had a terrific opportunity to speak at the Horizons Academy (Grades 4-12) in Manatee County Florida.  Horizons Academy is an alternative school for some of our area’s youngsters who have had a troubled past.

Horizons Academy offers these kids an opportunity to improve upon their situation and their lives and begin a fresh start for their future.  I spoke to the group as requested by Deputy Harris in the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.  I took my time with the youngsters to talk about the importance of making good decisions in life in order to lead a successful, productive and happy life. All the youngsters got a thrill when I threw out some autogrpahed balls and bobbelehead dolls after I was done speaking. Meeting all the wonderful people at Horizons was a lot of fun and I hope I was able to bring a smile and some positive thoughts to these young kids.

Gulf Coast Community Foundation :

I was selected to be a part of the Because it Matters media campaign created by the Gulf Coast Community Foundation.  The goal of the campaign is to encourage our citizens to communicate in a more civil and productive manner.  I had the opportunity to offer a personal testimonial about the importance of thinking positively each day of your life.  By having a positive attitude for each day, you can achieve your goals and make your dreams a reality.

This is something I believe very strongly and I look forward to sharing more of my thoughts and insights on this concept in my new motivational DVDs which will be released by the end of this year.  The Gulf Coast Community Foundation campaign is sure to be a huge success because of all of the dedicated people that they have on their side such as Marjorie Floyd and her entire team.  The campaign will also include other celebrity testimonials such as Master’s winner, Mark O’Meara and tennis great, Martina Navratilova.  I certainly was honored to participate and be part of such an esteemed group.  I am confident the Because It Matters campaign will have a great impact on our local community.

The Sarasota Sports Foundation:

The Sarasota Sports Foundation is a local non-profit funding organization that is doing some amazing things to prevent the cycle of child abuse, neglect and abandonment in our local community.

Founded by Graci McGillicuddy just a few years ago, the Sarasota Sports Foundation has already raised significant funds that have been granted to agencies in our area that are helping put an end to child abuse.  I had a great time shooting the public service announcement to promote their upcoming 3rd Annual celebrity gala and golf tournament which will be held at the Longboat Key Club and Resort.

I can assure you this will be a first-class event to be held on November 16-17, 2007 and will be packed with lots of great celebrities such as, John Daly, Toby Hall and Scott Eyre, to name a few.  Graci McGillicuddy and Trish Fitzgerald of the foundation are so committed to their organization and they always put on a great event. I wish them continued success in their fight against child abuse.

The Out of Door Academy Varsity Volleyball Team:

I had a great time on August 20th as my wife, Lorraine, and I had a special evening of dinner and a movie in our home with the members, coaches and administrators of the 2007-08 Women’s Varsity Volleyball Team from Out-of-Door Academy (ODA) here in Sarasota, Florida.   The dinner was the result of the players’ parents’ generosity by being the high bidder on the “Dinner and a Movie with Dick Vitale” at the school’s 2006 Extravaganza fundraiser event which raised over $430,000 for the school. The girls were a lot of fun and seemed very excited about having a great season this year.  After the team enjoyed the great food prepared by Gordon Lippe of Gordon’s Gourmet, I invited them up to our movie theatre and shared with them some of my insights on what it takes to be successful both on and off the court.   I always cherish the opportunity to connect with young student-athletes and share some of what I believe are the secrets to succeeding in the game of life.  They were a great audience and a great group of young ladies.  I wish them much success in their season this year.  After I spoke, we watched an incredibly inspiring movie in our home theatre. It was the great sports movie “MIRACLE” that tells the triumphant ride of the 1980 U.S.A. Olympic Hockey team. I felt that the night was a great way to launch the team into the season with a great attitude and great spirit and I thank their parents, coaches and administrators for making it all possible.

Tampa Bay Lightning Coach, John Tortorella:

August 17th my wife and I shared a terrific evening with the head coach for the Tampa Bay Lightning, John Tortorella and his wife Christine. They drove to Lakewood Ranch to meet us for dinner and to discuss ideas about fundraising for a cause that both John and I are passionate about - cancer. We decided to have a private dinner for all the season ticket holders before a home Lightning game in which I will talk to everyone gathered. All donations from the evening will go towards benefitting the V Foundation, specifically towards a pediatric grant for cancer research in memory of Payton Wright. John is a terrific leader and a terrific human being. Tampa is lucky to have him on board!

Release of Motivational DVD's:

I had a blast this past Friday, August 10th as I was in the studio with a great team of people to produce and record my latest motivational DVDs which will be ready to purchase on my website in September 2007.  Over the years, I have had the opportunity to speak to so many great people from elementary school age youngsters, to college students, to world class athletes to corporate executives of Fortune 500 companies.  I have had the honor of working with the Washington Speakers Bureau who has booked me to speak to groups all across America.  In doing so, I have received hundreds of requests from fans asking me to produce a DVD in which they could bring my message right into their home, school, office, etc.  Well, we finally did it and I am so excited about it!  We have started with three different DVDs each on a specific topic that I feel passionate about…they are:

1) Winning in the Game of Life

2) The Formula for Success.

Passion + Work Ethic + Good Decision Making = W (Win) in the Game of Life

3) Never, Ever, Believe in the Word “CAN’T”

The DVDs will be for sale both individually or as a package of all three for a great value on my website!

These are messages that I have shared with top athletes to top executives and whether you are an educator, coach or business person… you can relate to the message in these DVDs and can make it work for you in achieving your dreams.

We produced the DVDs in a studio in my hometown of Sarasota, Florida at Sound Stage One / New Atmosphere Productions and we had a great time.  I had the pleasure of working some of the most professional folks in the business.  They included a great guy, John Klein with JK Productions.  John is a true professional and has helped me numerous times with all the tapings we do from Sarasota and my home.  Also on our great team were Steve Paturaquian, Mark Palmer of Mars Vision and a talented graphic designer, Nick Kavoules, who helped with the set design.

Also, there helping us that day was Linny Correa with Colours by Linny who assisted with makeup.  Anther great guy and rising talent in the world of broadcasting was Antawan Smith of SNN.  Antawan offered his talent to do all of the openings to introduce me in each of the three DVDs.  I am very blessed to have so many talented people working with me to develop these exciting DVDs.  I hope you like them as much as I do!  Remember, check back on my site in September 2007 to check them out!

Sarasota Christian Basketball Camp:

What a fun afternoon I had when I took my twin grandsons, Connor and Jake (age 4) with me to watch a basketball camp being held for youngsters in Sarasota. My two little grandsons love hoops so I thought they would get a thrill watching some older kids participate in a camp being run by Sarasota Christian High School Basketball Coach, Phil Helmuth. Coach Helmuth even let Jake and Connor do some of the passing drills and shooting drills.

While I was there, I spoke to the campers for a few minutes about making good choices and about following your dreams. It was a great afternoon on one of my days off!

Boys and Girls Clubs Scholarships:

On Tuesday, July 10th, I had the opportunity to go to one of my favorite places…The Lee Wetherington Boys & Girls Club of Sarasota, Florida.  The work being done there by the personnel under the leadership of Mack Reid is nothing shy of remarkable.  You cannot find a more dedicated and committed group of people as they work tirelessly to help the young people right here in my local community.  My wife and I have been longtime supporters of the Boys & Girls Clubs across America, and locally, Lorraine and I have awarded 5 scholarships to deserving youngsters for the past ten years.  This year marked the 10th anniversary of our scholarships so it was particularly meaningful for me and my family.  This year’s recipients were five remarkable individuals who are incredible young people who are working hard to build a bright future for themselves, their families and their community.  The winners of the scholarships were:

  • 1)       Kristen Desmarais
  • 2)       Ashley Briggs
  • 3)       Elizabeth Pires
  • 4)       Jelica Thomassen
  • 5)       Gavin Cherry

I am so honored to help make a difference in the future of these talented kids.  Their hard work and determination is exactly why I love to work with young people and they are proving to be incredible role models for the younger students at the Boys & Girls Clubs.  My wife and I wish them nothing but continued success in pursuit of their goals and dreams.

While I visited the club to award my scholarships, I had the opportunity to speak to several hundred of the campers, ages 6-18 and we talked about the importance of making intelligent decisions in their lives.  I always truly enjoy this opportunity to connect with the youngsters in my area.

Lastly, another reason for my visit was a special and touching tribute.  It was the permanent placement of a life-size clown, “Dipsy Doo Dunkeraroo” which will be showcased outside of the Dick Vitale Gymnasium at the Club.  I am most humbled and honored by this recognition and hope the clown puts a smile on the faces of many children who will see it through the years.  The clown was initially sponsored by my wife and I to support a fundraiser for our local Tidewell Hospice and Palliative Care, another tremendous organization.

The clown was then auctioned off and permanently placed at the location of the bidder’s choosing.  The highest bidder of “Dipsy Doo” was a long time past board member of the Lee Wetherington Boys & Girls Club, Wells Purmont of Purmort of Purmort and Martin Insurance, and was kind and generous enough to want “Dipsy Doo’ placed outside of the gym bearing my name at the club.  It truly was a memorable day.

2007 Dick Vitale Gala Honoring Coach K:

The Dick Vitale gala to raise money for the V Foundation in the fight against cancer was really a special, special evening. We honored Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, who really wowed the crowd of close to 650 people, who paid $1,000 a piece to attend. Also honored was a local superstar, Eileen Curd, who has raised thousands and thousands of dollars for the fight against cancer. This one evening raised over $1,000,000 for cancer research - that is AWESOME BABY!

There was so much emotion and passion in that room. There were several cancer survivors in attendance, and others fighting the disease. There was so much courage there. Everywhere you looked, their were star coaches from the world of sports. I can't thank those guys enough as they paid their own way to attend, transportation, hotel, etc. In attendance were Tom Izzo of Michigan State, Rick Pitino of Louisville, Bill Self of Kansas, John Calipari of Memphis, Gary Williams of Maryland, Tom Crean of Marquette, Kelvin Sampson of Indiana, Mike Brey of Notre Dame, Stan Heath of South Florida, Fred Hill of Rutgers, Derreck Whittenberg of Fordham, Florida assisant coach Larry Shyatt, and ESPN's own Fran Fraschilla. The NBA was well represented by Chuck Daly, Mike Fratello, Brian Hill, Terry Stotts and referee Bob Delaney.

Others from the world of sports in attendance included Tampa Bay Lightning coach John Tortorella, a Stanley Cup champion, Lightning president Ron Campbell, tennis guru Nick Bolletieri, Jon LeCrone (Horizon League commissioner), and former NBA stars Johnny Dawkins, Mark Alarie and Ed Pinckney.

Manatee Person of the Year - Nolan Middle School:

On May 10th, I was truly honored to receive the “Manatee Person of the Year” Award from the students of Nolan Middle School in Lakewood Ranch, Florida.  The students of the Gifted Program at Nolan Middle had a special evening called the “Night of the Notables” whereby each student in the gifted program at the school had to select someone they admired, living or dead, and study their life and their accomplishments.  Some students studied past world leaders, famous athletes, architects, writers, business leaders, inventors, etc.  It was a fun night as it took place right in the Nolan Middle School cafeteria.  The night was organized by Dr. Novello, Head of the gifted program at Nolan Middle School.   Dr. Novello was a very kind and intelligent woman who reminded me of my days as a middle school teacher back in New Jersey.  While there that evening, I had an opportunity to mingle with the students and chat with them about some of the “notable” individuals they studied.  Nolan student, Brendan Rempernt was dressed as his hero, tennis champion Pete Sampras; while Andrew Fallon chose to dress and study the Leonard Da Vinci.  Britney Wenger, introduced my to the students that evening and her hero and notable person of interest was Ruby Bridges.   I was joined by mi wife, and my daughter Terri and her two children, Sydney and Ryan.  It was a fun night and I was truly touched by the kindness of the students in selecting me for this distinguished honor.

Florida High School Baseball Championships:

Mother’s Day is always special as you reflect back on your childhood and all you learned under the guidance and direction of your mom.  I certainly would like to toast every mother out there for health and happiness and success in their lives.  My day included an evening bash at my home with all the coaches of the various high schools that have earned the right to play for the Florida High School State Baseball Championships.  Each year, my wife and I have the pleasure to host a celebration in honor of the participants of the state tournament since the games were awarded to the City of Sarasota and are played at Ed Smith Stadium (Spring Training Home of the Cincinnati Reds).

This year our local area is thrilled because three of the teams that have made it coming out of the regionals are Sarasota High School, Sara Christian High School and Venice High School.  All of whom will all chase the prestigious High School State Championship in their respective classifications.  Pat Calhoun who is the leader at the Ed Smith Complex has done a phenomenal job in making it possible for Sarasota to be the host for this exciting sporting event.  The week brings in added revenues to the area and it is really great to see the stars of tomorrow right here in my hometown.

The Sarasota Film Festival:

Spencer Ross, voice of the New York Knicks, and his wife joined Lorraine and me at the Film Festival.

This year I was thrilled to be asked to be the honorary chairperson for the 2007 Sarasota Film Festival. Over the past nine years, the Sarasota Film Festival has grown to one of the premier film festivals in the country. It has grown in length, (from three to ten days), attendance (from 2,300 to over 45,000) and scope (from 10 screenings to over 200 films, and adding nationally-recognized education programs, over a dozen special events, and talkbacks and panels with some of the leading voices in film today). The festivals mission is “to present unique and high-quality cinema in a festival atmosphere for the purpose of educating, stimulating and entertaining audiences” remains its guide as it selects and organizes in-festival and year-round activities.

On Saturday, April 14th, I was a part of the "Reel Experience at the Lake Club" which honored Edward Norton, Brian Koppelman, Elias Koteas, Patrick Wilson, Kim Raver, Anna Chlumsky and Dagmara Dominiczyk. Festival-goers enjoyed the signature cuisine of Michael’s On East and the jazzy sounds of The Big Z Band. During the event, we presented the Excellence in Screenwriting Award to Mr. Koppelman, and the Humanitarian Award to Ed Norton for his involvement with various progressive social causes.

All proceeds from The Reel Experience at The Lake Club supported the Festival's Award-Winning Outreach and Education Programs.

A Night Honoring Football Coach Mike Dowling:

Coach Mike Dowling and Congressman Vern Buchanan.

I had a blast being a guest speaker at an event honoring high school football coach, Mike Dowling. Coach Dowling has coached 28 years at Cardinal Mooney High School located in Sarasota County. Over 400 people were in attendance to congratulate Caoch Dowling on his accomplishments and to wish him well in retirement. Several former players spoke as well as Congressman from the Sarasota District, Vern Buchanan.

The Lake Club Experience to benefit the V Foundation:

Tom Danahy, President of SMR Communities, and his associates.

I was proud to help raise over $10,000 for the V Foundation thru the support of the Lakewood Ranch Community. A new development of homes is being constructed in Lakewood Ranch in a community called The Lake Club. The ten model homes in this development welcomed donations to the V Foundation over a two month period. I also was a guest speaker at one of the homes in which I spoke passionately about the V Foundation and my late buddy, Jim Valvano and encouragd people to give whatever they could to the cause of finding a cure for cancer. Thru the generous support of this community we raised over $10,000 - way to go Lakewood Ranch! I am so proud to be a part of this community!

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Sarasota:

DICK VITALEMack Reid, Executive Director of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Sarasota County:

"The Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota County’s mission is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those that need us the most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens. The Clubs serve over 6,200 boys and girls between the ages of six and eighteen at nine sites throughout Sarasota County. Dick Vitale and his friends and associates created the “Dick Vitale Sports Night” dinner to raise funds to benefit the children of Sarasota County. It was Dick’s dream at the inception of this event to eventually raise $1,000,000. After six years, the event raised over $1,100,000 and Dick’s dream for the kids became a reality. The funds were used to build a state of the art, 38,000 square foot Boys & Girls Club! In honor of Dick’s love and concern for the children, the board of directors and staff dedicated the “Dick Vitale Health and Fitness Center” in the new facility.

Dick brings great awareness and has motivated others to help support the Boys & Girls Club and its mission. He is a great role model for our children and is always willing to help them in anyway that he can.

In addition, for the past nine years, Dick and his wife Lorraine have sponsored five Boys & Girls Club members each year to a $1,000 college scholarship!! A personal gift of $45,000 to help our kids get off to college on the right foot!!

Dick brings great awareness and has motivated others to help support the Boys & Girls Club and its mission. He is a great role model for our children and is always willing to help them in anyway that he can."

DICK VITALE

Nick Valvano, Chief Executive Officer, V Foundation:

"When the Board of Directors for The V Foundation for Cancer Research was being formed more than a dozen years ago, Jim Valvano’s friend and broadcast colleague Dick Vitale was a natural choice to help keep Jim’s “Don’t Ever Give Up!” spirit alive.

Dick Vitale has played a vital role in accomplishing the three objectives of all great board members.

Since then, The Foundation has raised more than $60 million for cancer research, funding hundreds of research grants nationwide. Dick Vitale has played a vital role in accomplishing the three objectives of all great board members – creating awareness, linking and introducing business and private connections, and raising funds – all to help support The V Foundation’s mission to finance cutting-edge research to help find cures for cancer.

Dick has used his personal and professional contacts to help generate a number of new donors to The V Foundation, resulting in significant financial contributions annually.

He joined forces with fellow board members Mike Krzyzewski and John Saunders to generate funding for The V Foundation’s endowment, resulting in a one-year “Million Dollar Club,” identifying 20 donors who pledged $50,000 each to help complete the first phase of The Foundation’s endowment. Dick has now started on his second “Million Dollar” group.

Dick uses his vast celebrity on radio and television broadcasts and through the print media, during his prolific public speaking schedule and at his book signings to bring awareness to The Foundation. This is best displayed with his impassioned messaging during the annual Jimmy V Basketball Classic to both the fans at Madison Square Garden and a world-wide ESPN television audience.

Most recently, Dick and Lorraine Vitale opened their hearts and beautiful Florida home to host the “Dick Vitale Evening with the Stars,” resulting in the single most successful fundraiser held at a private home in their Florida area. This kick-off will result in future similar fundraisers throughout the area.

He generously shares his celebrity and credibility to promote The Foundation.

“Dick Vitale brings the same passion he displays for college basketball to The V Foundation for Cancer Research,” said Foundation CEO Nick Valvano. He generously shares his celebrity and credibility to promote The Foundation. Whether it be opening his home, corporate speaking engagements, or sharing his vast network of business and personal contacts, Dick relentlessly and passionately generates donors and friends for The V Foundation, as well as awareness of The Foundation's work.

“We are indebted for the millions of dollars that Dick has helped us raise,” Valvano concluded. “But, most importantly, we are grateful for his friendship.”

Children's First Head Start and Early Head Start of Sarasota:

I had so much fun as approximately 40 kids from the Sarasota area, ranging in ages from 4 to 6 years old, joined me for breakfast at my favorite place, The Broken Egg in Lakewood Ranch.  The children, along with their teachers, piled into their school bus for a mini field trip to meet "Yours Truly" and enjoy some of the delicious pancakes, eggs and fruit from The Broken Egg.  The kids also enjoyed a special behind-the-scenes tour of the busy happenings inside a restaurant and how it operates in the kitchen.  In fact, each kid had a blast as they helped the cooks when they helped to crack several eggs in the kitchen!   The kids were all very well-mannered and had a great time.  But, honestly, I think I had more fun than all of them combined.

But, honestly, I think I had more fun than all of them combined.

I even had a chance to share some words with the kids and expressed how important I believe it is for them to listen to their parents and teachers and follow good advice,  I am a strong believer that kids are never too young to start talking to them about the importance of making intelligent decisions in life.   Of course, I had to make sure as they left that no child left empty-handed.  I gave each kid an autographed book and some kids even won a special autographed basketball.  Even though, I may have been the one that treated the kids to a fun-filled breakfast, I think that in the end, I was the one that was really treated to a special and memorable morning.   The kids that joined me were from Children First Head Start and Early Head Start of Sarasota County and their dedicated teachers who joined the children for the morning were: Laura Ruble, Carla Williams, Marty Plouffe, Elham Abusalih, Julia Lamons, Sheri Penxa, and Martha Skelton.

Muscular Dystrophy:

I had the pleasure of enjoying breakfast at the Broken Egg on Siesta Key with some great people who also live in the Sarasota area.  I had a blast talking it up with NFL stars, Mike Gruttadauria and Tom Nutten, as well as with Dick Smothers of the hilarious, Smothers Brothers.  They were all there to participate in the kick-off for the Muscular Dystrophy fundraising campaign at the Broken Egg.  The campaign is led by the one and only, Betty Matthews, who dedicates her efforts to raising money for this important cause.  Last year, the Broken Egg raised over $10,000 for MDA and they hope to match it or even exceed it this year.

Tom and Mike were NFL teammates for the St. Louis Rams, and were Super Bowl Champs under the leadership of Dick Vermeil.  Tom, Mike, Dick SMothers and "Yours Truly" all had a great time and patrons of the Broken Egg generously gave to support the MDA campaign.  We certainly had a blast signing autographs and taking pictures with guests and Betty worked tirelessly to spark a lot of excitement for this fundraising effort.  It was a special and fun-filled morning.

Sarasota Area Sports Authority:

The Sarasota Area Sports Authority (SASA) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to support area sports events and programs, including providing scholarship opportunities to high school athletes and financially needy youth. On November 11, 2006, SASA presented Dick Vitale with its Sports Person of the Year award for his tireless effort in promoting youth sports and supporting efforts to bring events to the Sarasota area. “The energy that Dick Vitale brought was so exciting!” said Elizabeth Green, President of the Central North Carolina Chapter of the National MS Society.  “The audience was spellbound by his enthusiastic, larger than life presence and catchy, humorous ‘Vitale-isms.’ We are so very honored that Mr. Vitale generously volunteered his time and talents to work with us to fight multiple sclerosis.”

In addition to funding MS-related research, the Central North Carolina Chapter provides services and programs to nearly 2,100 people with MS and their families in 15 North Carolina counties: Alamance, Alleghany, Ashe, Caswell, Davidson, Davie, Forsyth, Guilford, Randolph, Rockingham, Stokes, Surry, Watauga, Wilkes and Yadkin.

Studies show that early and ongoing treatment with an FDA-approved therapy can reduce future disease activity and improve quality of life for many people with multiple sclerosis. Talk to your health care professional and contact the National MS Society at www.nationalmssociety.org or 1-800-FIGHT-MS to learn about ways to help manage multiple sclerosis and about current research that may one day reveal a cure."

Payton's Party:

As it appeared on www.dickvitaleonline.com in August 2006 by DIck Vitale:

"I was overwhelmed by the support in my Lakewood Ranch and Bradenton neighborhoods. So many beautiful people rallied around Payton Wright, a four-year old girl with a very rare brain cancer. I am so proud of the people in the area as they showed so much class, responding in a positive way.

DICK VITALE

They came out to support Payton and her family. She has been undergoing chemotherapy both in All-Children's Hospital in Florida and now at Duke. The parents, Holly and Patrick, have gone through so much, watching their girl go through such tough times. They are so strong and courageous.

Holly and Patrick spoke to the crowd and it was heart-wrenching. There wasn't a dry eye in the house.

In less than four weeks, we raised over $107,000 for the Payton Wright Wellness Fund. She and the family face such a tough task.

Our house was filled with such love and jubilation, though it was heartbreaking when Payton was in so much pain and had to leave. I can't thank people enough.

Our house was filled with such love and jubilation, though it was heartbreaking when Payton was in so much pain and had to leave. I can't thank people enough ... they extended a hand to a family in need. That is so special to see people coming through. That is called love and it means so much when you bring a smile to other people's faces.

There was other good news when the Jimmy V Foundation announced a research grant in Payton's name for $50,000. I am so proud to be a member of the board of directors of the V Foundation. They had a great weekend at the V Foundation golf tournament in Cary, North Carolina as well. It is so important to beat the dreaded disease of cancer.

Thanks also to Mike and Mike of ESPN radio and others that helped to support this event."

Motivating the Troops at MacDill Air Force Base:

As it appeared on www.dickvitaleonline.com in October 2005 by Dick Vitale:

DICK VITALE

"I was at MacDill Air Force base in Florida, speaking to hundreds of service members who will be deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. They will represent our beautiful nation and the red, white and blue.

Within my speech, I told them how proud our country was of them, those willing to make sacrifices to help better our lives.

Within my speech, I told them how proud our country was of them, those willing to make sacrifices to help better our lives.

I also had a chance to share that many Hall of Fame coaches -- like Mike Krzyzewski, Bob Knight, Lute Olson, John Chaney and a host of others, like Tubby Smith, Rick Pitino, Roy Williams and Gary Williams -- would love to have them on their team. They would be our ultimate dream team because they represent all the characteristics the aforementioned coaches and yours truly would love to see in every athlete.

They are also unselfish, not greedy and thinking of me, me, me.

They have superb discipline, dedication and desire. They are also unselfish, not greedy and thinking of me, me, me. It is all about team, baby, the best one of all, the USA, red, white and blue.

From the moment my wife and I were greeted by Lt. Col. David Cohen and other personnel, including Wendy Foster and Rachel Andreas, we could feel the passion and the pride they had. Every time Cohen opened his mouth, his heart poured out about the love of the people under his command.

The tour of the base included a view of a KC-135 plane where they showed us how they supply fuel to fighter planes in battle. It was absolutely amazing.

One of the highlights came when I shared a moment with Gen. John Abizaid, the head of central command, and Gen. Norty Schwartz, who is in charge of transportation. That means he has a great deal of accountability and responsibility.

It was so special to talk with Gen. Abizaid. Sitting at the coffee table, sharing moments with the generals and hearing of the love for his people. Abizaid recently went to Walter Reed hospital to visit with a number of service members who suffered serious injuries. Several lost limbs, one was blinded; yet all were concerned about their fellow troops and when they could go back to battle for their units.

Talk about dedication; I was choked up big-time! I was proud to receive hugs from the hundreds there. It felt so good, being with people who bring so much pride to our nation.

They are the reason we enjoy the freedoms we have. I told them how much we pray for them and that we think of them often. They are genuine heroes.

They are the reason we enjoy the freedoms we have. I told them how much we pray for them and that we think of them often. They are genuine heroes.

To me, a hero is not an athlete who runs, jumps, shoots a basketball, hits a baseball, catches a football, etc. Heroes are people like them, putting their life on the line for their fellow man. There is no other way to label them other than courageous.

We admire and respect the talent of an athlete, but they are not heroic like the men and women going into battle.

It was a day I will always treasure. I have the opportunity to speak with many different groups -- at coaching clinics, Hall of Fame ceremonies, etc. -- and I have been blessed. Over the last 10 years with the Washington Speakers Bureau, I have enjoyed the opportunity to travel and meet so many special individuals. The moment I had standing in front of our troops put goose bumps through my body. Then, when I received a special rare coin from the generals, it made me very proud.

Now I really understand the feelings Jay Bilas, Tom Izzo, Mark Gottfried, Kelvin Sampson, Bobby Cremins and other coaches shared on their recent trip abroad.

I was proud to represent ESPN and all of the people I work with. I wanted the troops to know we love them, admire them and respect them."
