This weekend, October 17th, my wife and I had a beautiful time in Tallahassee, Florida for the Notre Dame-Florida State big football weekend. I had the honor to speak at the Notre Dame pep rally in front of the Notre Dame Alumni Club and it was an absolute blast. Cheerleaders, the leprechaun, and everyone were out full force as I shared the mic with Athletic Director Jeff Swarbrick.

Notre Dame put up an incredible battle against the #2 team in the nation but lost to a heartbreaker on the the last play as a penalty was called after it looked like Notre Dame had won the football game.

It was a special classic that will always be remembered as a great football weekend. Thank you to the people of Florida State for a great weekend and being so kind to my me and my wife.

I had a fantastic time as the keynote speaker for First Watch Leadership Conference 2014 at Rosen Shingle Creek Resort in Orlando. First Watch is one of my favorite places for breakfast and lunch in Lakewood Ranch. I am very proud of the recent growth of First Watch adding 50 stores in the last year totaling 150 stores. The very generous executives donated $20K+ to the V Foundation. CEO, Ken Pendery and  CMO, Chris Tomasso are my kind of people. They are all about family and have a passion for helping others. I can`t thank them enough, as I gathered before 200 people from First Watch family and shared our message and received a standing ovation.

The battle to make the Top four in college football is already a wild ride!

Just when you thought it was easy to figure out, upset city hit. Arizona scored a stunning upset at Oregon. Utah State gave previously-unbeaten BYU a shocking setback. The state of Mississippi went wild as Mississippi State beat Texas A&M and Ole Miss rallied to knock off Alabama. Utah stunned UCLA. TCU won at home, edging Oklahoma.

Other schools scored important wins. Auburn easily defeated LSU. Notre Dame got a huge victory over a tough, defensive-minded Stanford squad.

It is excitement galore every week.

Tears were flowing in our household during Derek Jeter’s farewell to Yankee Stadium. What a storybook ending with the game-winning hit. I loved the final words of Bob Costas, who said Derek represented the pinstripes with total class.

I don’t think Hollywood would have believed that script from Thursday night. Jeter would have had the key RBI before the ninth inning. Then David Robertson gave up two home runs in the ninth, setting the stage for the dramatic moment.

It was absolutely incredible. Jeter deserved to enjoy every moment of the post-game celebration. It was wonderful to see all of his former Yankee teammates and former manager Joe Torre there, plus his family.

Congrats on a great career, Derek.

This should be another exciting week for college football fans.

It starts on Thursday with a pair of ranked teams squaring off. Auburn takes on Kansas State. The SEC has seven teams ranked in the AP Top 15 this week, so there is some pressure to back it up.

#1 Florida state has an ACC showdown against Clemson. Alabama hosts Florida in an SEC match-up. You also have Oklahoma against West Virginia and Miami-Florida at Nebraska. Mountaineer QB Clint Trickett threw for 511 yards last week; Bob Stoops will have a few sleepless nights thinking about that.

It should be a fun weekend indeed.

There are certainly a number of issues involving NFL players and their off-field issues.

On the field, there have been a few surprises already. The Buffalo Bills are 2-0 after an impressive and emotional win over Miami. The team honored late owner Ralph Wilson over the weekend and the players responded. The Houston Texans won two games all of last season; the Bill O’Brien-led squad is now 2-0 after winning at the Raiders.

The Saints are a surprising 0-2 after losing at Cleveland on a late field goal. Don’t count Drew Brees and company out.
