Friday was a special day in Detroit. We celebrated the 40th anniversary of the U. Of Detroit Titans team which won 21 straight games and beat eventual NCAA champion Marquette.

I really enjoyed catching up with all of the former players. Terry Duerod had his jersey retired and that was tremendous, a well-deserves honor.

Now it is off to call Florida State vs. Notre Dame on Saturday!

I had a great time calling the Florida State-Louisville basketball game last Saturday.

My friends, Tallahassee was rocking and rolling. It is more than a college football town. The Seminoles are enjoying a special season, challenging for the ACC lead.

Leonard Hamilton has a deep and talented team. He goes out and uses 12 players, putting fresh bodies on the court. Sometimes that hurts the team’s rhythm, but at the end of the game, Florida State is in good position.

I have been very impressed with Jonathan Isaac and Dwayne Bacon. This team will be a tough out come tournament time.

I had a great time hosting a party for the Notre Dame lacrosse team, which was working out at IMG Academy. The Irish will play an exhibition game against the USA national team on Sunday at 1 pm.

Coach Kevin Corrigan is excited about Notre Dame this season as the team is ranked fourth nationally in the preseason poll.

I know someone else who is excited about the Irish. My son-in-law, Dr. Chris Sforzo, played lacrosse at Notre Dame and loved his time in South Bend.

There is hockey fever down in Tampa!

The Lightning will host game one of the Stanley Cup finals on Wednesday, taking on the Chicago Blackhawks. This should be a super series. I do not know much about hockey, but I love the enthusiasm of the fans when I go to some games.

Tampa Bay has an outstanding coach in Jon Cooper and a terrific front office with Steve Yzerman. Owner Jeff Vinik wanted to build a winner and he has a lot of young talent on the roster with Steven Stamkos and Tyler Johnson leading the way. The key in the series could be goaltender Ben Bishop, who shutout the Rangers in game seven of the Eastern Conference final.

I am picking the Lightning to win in six games.

It has been a busy week.
On Wednesday, I had a great time at Florida Gulf Coast University. There was a book signing, I got to meet the school’s president, athletic director and many passionate fans. The Eagles fell short against North Florida on the hardwood.

Thursday night was out Stars and Cars event at Mercedes-Benz of Sarasota. We raised money for the V Foundation and were thrilled to have Indianapolis 500 champion Ryan Hunter-Reay in attendance. He is a terrific young man. Also there were former Red Sox star Rico Petrocelli, former NFL player Willie Clark, ex-Big Ten stars Marcus Liberty and Jerod Ward. It was a special evening for a very good cause.

There are certainly a number of issues involving NFL players and their off-field issues.

On the field, there have been a few surprises already. The Buffalo Bills are 2-0 after an impressive and emotional win over Miami. The team honored late owner Ralph Wilson over the weekend and the players responded. The Houston Texans won two games all of last season; the Bill O’Brien-led squad is now 2-0 after winning at the Raiders.

The Saints are a surprising 0-2 after losing at Cleveland on a late field goal. Don’t count Drew Brees and company out.

Kentucky showed why they came into the tourney as numero uno.  The Wildcats were in a battle with Iowa State, and then came a 20-2 run.  Marquis Teague was brilliant.  Next up tje Wildcats face Indiana in a rematch of a game the Hoosiers own by one point.

It looked like Indiana was finished until a late run which featured Will Sheehey’s game winning jumper with 12.7 seconds left.  Tom Crean’s team did a great job.

The dream season for Murray State ended in a tough game against Marquette.  Jae Crowder has been the shining star for Buzz Williams’ team.

Syracuse dominated in the second half in a win over Kansas State.  Wisconsin, even though a higher seed, surprised me by beating Vanderbilt.  Give a salute to Bo Ryan as his team controlled tempo.

Ohio State showed great balance against Gonzaga with Jared Sullinger, DeShaun Thomas, Aaron Craft and William Bufurd all in double figures.

By the end of Sunday, we will have our Sweet 16 in place.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas.  I sure did!  What a terrific weekend with my family and loved ones.  I am so deeply blessed and am so thankful for all of my blessings.  I loved watching my five grandkids tear open their gifts with excitement.  Nothing beats the happiness on the kids faces at Christmas time.   YEsterday, my wife and I enjoyed Christmas Eve mass followed by dinner at my daughter’s house with all the grandkids.  Today, we watched them all open their gifts and then had Christmas dinner at our house.  A truly AWESOME weekend!

Every year I look forward to seeing the new diaper dandies.  Yes, the high school sensations who now enter college and see if they live up to their billing.  As we finish the pre conference schedule, the three top diaper dandies that I have seen who have been everything as advertised are Anthony Davis (Kentucky), Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (Kentucky), and Cody Zeller (Indiana).  There are obviously a host of others, including Austin Rivers (Duke), Quincy Miller (Baylor), and  Andre Dummond (Connecticut).  But let me tell you, these three have stood out.  They have been consistent and solid since the day they stepped foot on campus.  Davis is a shot blocker deluxe. Kidd-Gilchrist is a coach’s dream.  He does whatever it takes to get to the winners circle.  Zeller is exactly what Tom Crean needed to give the Indiana program a big lift.  He is a skilled big player who is so effective in the low post.  Yes, all three are special and they are going to have a major impact on their respective programs.

Dick Vitale Day at All Childrens Hospital

I can’t think of a more meaningful way to spend a day than what my wife and I did today.  I was honored and thrilled to have “Dick Vitale Day at All-Children’s Hospital” in Tampa.  I spent the day touring this incredible facility and visiting with all the sick youngsters.  Meeting these kids and their families makes you realize how special each day is and to never take anything we have in life for granted.
